Book Review: Swept to Sea

Swept to Sea by Heather Manning (4 star review)

Swept to Sea
Ladies of the Caribbean #1

by Heather Manning

256 pages // published in 2013 // Christian historical fiction

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Lady Eden Trenton never wanted to leave her privileged existence in London—until her father invites a dangerous suitor into her life. Left with few options, Eden devises the best reprieve she can: escape. Chasing freedom, she stows away aboard a pirate ship, praying she will gain her independence in the colonies before she is discovered by the nefarious crew.

Captain Caspian Archer has spent the last five years hardening his heart and searching to exact revenge for the event that tore his life to shreds. When he catches word that his enemy is residing in Jamaica, Caspian steers his ship toward the colonies in all haste. His plans soon change, however, when he discovers the young beauty hiding in his ship’s hold.

Cut from the only lives they have known, Caspian and Eden are pulled together as each pursues a fresh hope upon the sea.

My Review

4 Star Rating

Eighteen-year-old Lady Eden Trenton is between a rock and a hard place. Her father intends for her to marry a specially-chosen suitor -- but this man beats her when no one else is around. How could she desire to marry him? She can't, and she won't.

So she chooses a different (yet dangerous) option -- leaving her British life behind, she sneaks on board a ship that could get her across the sea to her brother in the Caribbean. Maybe climbing aboard a pirate ship isn't the safest way to get there...

The dual perspective allows the reader to also experience the story from the point of view of Captain Archer too. He is single-handedly parenting his young son as a widower, while keeping his crew in line where they should be, and he expertly knows how to battle it out with other ships, when required.

The plot has the ups-and-downs of a Disney movie (for adults); there's a brave girl who is standing up for herself, a bit of crushing sadness in the backstory, an epic adventure on the high seas, a villainous villain, and, of course, a hero with a gleaming sword who will rescue the damsel in distress, on occasion. However, every chapter has numerous references to physical abuse and some vague allusions to more mature content. This is not quite a sweet, innocent romance, as it deals with some heavy topics. There are some elements of faith intertwined into the story, which I am glad of, showing that Eden trusts God to lead her.

Language level: Mostly clean, but one word is used which (by itself) I would classify as a 3 out of 5 for foul language. Nothing else noted.

Minimum age to read: 16 and up.

Overall? I enjoyed this tale greatly. It has some very exciting moments, and the plot took a couple of twists that pleasantly surprised me too.

Book Review + GIVEAWAY! Protecting the Poor

This week signals the completion of the Tales of Faith series!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sheriff Feroci is now lord over the province, and Abtshire has become a pit of injustice. Being forced into the lord’s service does not give Dumphey as many opportunities to help the poor as he desires. When attempts on his life drive him into the forest, this freedom opens a world of possibilities for helping others. But how can he do so when he is running for his life? And does God want him to do more than simply feed the poor?

Noel has always hidden behind the shadow of his older brother, Dumphey. When life forces him to stand on his own, will he still follow God in the corrupt world in which he lives? Would God really call him to do something that is beyond his power to do?

As Lord Feroci's sinister plot comes to light, each lad has a choice to make. A choice that could cost them their lives.

An intriguing adventure, about keeping one's faith in God always, about standing up for others when you've been called to do it, about helping those less fortunate, about following God's guiding Word. Herein we have a plot inspired by Robin Hood. The historical elements embedded in the story add much flavor and detail. The medieval setting... the archery... the soldiers going to battle in chainmail... It feel stunning to be transported into this setting.

I love Amanda Tero's clear, strong writing style. Not flowery, nor bland; it hits the mark in the middle ground. She just knows how to tell a good story, and how to tell it well. Additionally, most characters spoke in a faintly detected Scottish accent, I believe. This added so much to the authenticity of their culture and background.

The thing I love most about the book is that it's a clean read which Christian families can be extremely happy to have in their homes. The main characters are striving to live Christ-filled lives, even in a setting of turmoil, fighting, and dealing with evil men of the world. Sets a good example to what we can do for God in our own lives. It's an adventure that kids/teens can all enjoy, probably ages 10 and up.

Book Review: Macbeth

Macbeth by William Shakespeare (4 star review)

Macbeth

by William Shakespeare

246 pages // published in 1606 // classic play

BOOK DESCRIPTION

One night on the heath, the brave and respected general Macbeth encounters three witches who foretell that he will become king of Scotland. At first sceptical, he’s urged on by the ruthless, single-minded ambitions of Lady Macbeth, who suffers none of her husband’s doubt. But seeing the prophecy through to the bloody end leads them both spiralling into paranoia, tyranny, madness, and murder. This shocking tragedy - a violent caution to those seeking power for its own sake - is, to this day, one of Shakespeare’s most popular and influential masterpieces.

My Review

4 Star Rating

My first venture into Shakespeare's world... And I ended up with the dark tragedy, The Scottish Play itself. Macbeth. I think I like it.

A story of man's (and woman's) selfish desires to be powerful and leader over all; of the sinful and murderous natures that humans have; of the effects of guilt and shame that take a toll on a person who has committed horrible actions...

This play is an interesting study of human nature to contrast Macbeth's actions with that of his wife's. The one, who cannot secretly harbor the evil deed in his heart, the other who has the mental calmness to plot, theorize, and coordinating the whole scheme to get to her desired destination: the royal throne of Scotland. What opposites they are, yet this couple still works out one of the sneakiest assassinations ever known -- fictionally, of course.

Now, it's really not a long play to read. (I was glad for that, as I was just wanting to test the waters of the Bard. I feel like I could read more from him in the future and not feel daunted by the task.) The Old English phrasings may be something you have to adjust to while reading, but I personally felt like I was able to understand the scenes fairly well.

Minimum age to read: 16 and up.

Book Review: Almost Perfect

Almost Perfect by Diane Daniels Manning (5 star review)

Almost Perfect

by Diane Daniels Manning

340 pages // published in 2014 // animal fiction

BOOK DESCRIPTION

An old woman who has given up hope and a boy who believes the impossible wonder if life would be perfect at the Westminster Dog Show.

Seventy-year old Bess Rutledge has dreamed of winning the Westminster Dog Show all her life. Despite her decades-long career as one of America’s top Standard Poodle breeders, she has decided she’s too old to hold on to her foolish dream. She sells off all the dogs in her once famous kennel except for the aging champion McCreery and his mischievous, handsome son Breaker. Part of her senses they might have been the ones to take her to Westminster, if only she’d dared to try.

Bess meets Benny, a teenager with mild autism who attends a therapeutic special school, and learns he has a dream of his own: to impress his self-absorbed mother. Benny is drawn into the world of dog shows and becomes convinced he has found the perfect way to win his mother’s attention. If he can win Westminster with either McCreery or Breaker, he just knows she will finally be proud of him. Getting Bess to go along with his plan, however, is not going to be so easy. . .

My Review

5 Star Rating

I was immediately completely sold when I read this paragraph in the first chapter:

"His dad wouldn't let him have a dog -- period! -- but especially not a poodle. His dad said poodles were sissy dogs, and his dad was right. He had a book with pictures of every kind of dog in the world and had already picked out his favorite: a brown and white beagle like Snoopy. He wouldn't mind a collie like Lassie either."

(At this point I knew that me and Benny would get along great in this story, since we are on the same page when it comes to dog breeds.)

The story takes place in the 1990s. (I didn't quite catch on to the decade gap for a while.) Herein we find an aging woman snatching at a final chance to accomplish the unrealized dream of a lifetime. A young boy growing up, broken dreams shattering around him, until he finds a calling. A dog calling out for him.

I enjoyed the storyline quite a bit! However, in the author's writing style, I found a few dozen too many similes (for my personal taste).

Contains some allusions to adult content, although not detailed. Also includes topics related to dog breeding.

Minimum age to read: 16 and up.

Overall? If you're interested in any of the related topics, such as poodles, dog shows, mentally challenged kids, complicated family relationships, and unique friendship bonds, you'll probably like this novel.
