My Review...

5 Star Rating

From the beautiful cover, to the historical setting, to the heartfelt message it gives a reader on a cold December night... it's a keeper!

This story is a glimpse into a young married couple's life during the holidays in the Great Depression, just scraping by with their money. I felt that the historical descriptions are well-written, and the characters are sketched out well for the reader. There's sweetness in this tale, tinged with sorrow, though -- and together those two elements make for an emotional read.

What else do I love about it? This couple knows how to enjoy literature. I mean, they have really good taste. (Pivotal scenes of the plot revolve around this bibliophilic fact!) Immediately, I felt a personal kinship with these two new friends of mine.

Most important of all, this story has a great reminder: At Christmastime, there's always room for miracles.

"Books like that are good thing to have," said Alden. "It's good to have an old friend of a book we can always go back to for entertainment and cheer, and to remind ourselves who we really are -- because the books we love say more about us than anything else."

"But I love you more. You're more to me than all the books in the world."

  1. I quite like Foley's stories, but haven't read this one yet. If I finish off my two current Christmas stories and want another, I'll try this one!

  3. I had kind of forgotten about it, but I'll put it on my wish list now so that doesn't happen again. Right now I'm reading "Where Treetops Glisten" by Tricia Goyer, Cara Putman, and Sarah Sundin with my Kindle app, so gotta finish that first.

  4. @Hamlette, oooh! "Where Treetops Glisten" sounds really good! I've heard about it from some other bloggers, and I'm a fan of Tricia Goyer, so I should probably endeavor to read this one. :)

  5. I got it because I really like Sarah Sundin's writing, as her books tend to have realistic romances and not be really mushy, and have more going on than just boy-meets-girl. I'm about 2/3 of the way done with the first novella and liking it a lot!

  6. @Hamlette, sounds like an excellent book (and I look forward to trying Sundin too). I hope you enjoy the rest of the novellas! :)
