3 holiday picture books! (2022 new releases)

A Very Thankful Prayer Seek and Find: A Fall Poem of Blessings and GratitudeA Very Thankful Prayer Seek and Find: A Fall Poem of Blessings and Gratitude by Bonnie Rickner Jensen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Get this for your Thanksgiving celebration!

Need a quick Thanksgiving activity with your kiddos? You can purchase the board book -- or download the ebook today. It's a quick little read, only 6 scenes. The illustrations are just darling! It also keeps the kids occupied by searching for certain objects in each scene. My favorite element though is how it mentions God's love, and that's something we can all be thankful for!

The Christmas Book FloodThe Christmas Book Flood by Emily Kilgore
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I so enjoyed learning about the Christmas book flood tradition in Iceland. The people who live there love to read, read, read. So it's no surprise that when gift-giving season comes around, they reach for books to give to each other. A fun story for youngsters!

The narrator is superb for the audiobook. She has such a happy voice, and the story glitters by in a matter of minutes.

Keep this story in mind for a beautiful Christmas Eve read-aloud!

Giving Gal and the Christmas Cookie ExtravaganzaGiving Gal and the Christmas Cookie Extravaganza by Stephanie L. Jones
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The illustrations are so cute, vibrant, and artsy! This book is a lovely gift idea for young little girls. Adorable story! Love the holiday baking and all of the festive-ness.

A Very Bookish Thanksgiving

by Sarah Holman, Kelsey Bryant, Rebekah Jones, J. Grace Pennington, & Amanda Tero

428 pages // published in 2020 // Christian fiction anthalogy

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Five stories. Five book-lovers. Five Thanksgiving novellas inspired by five classics. This is a limited-edition novella collection with contributions by five different authors.

The Promise of Acorns ~ Kelsey Bryant
Erin Moore is a nanny whose strained relationship with Thanksgiving becomes even more complicated when her new employer asks her to teach his grandchildren about the holiday. The results surprise them both. Inspired by Jane Eyre,

As Long as I Belong ~ Sarah Holman
Young Annalise Marshell has always felt like she straddles two worlds, like Jane Austen’s Fanny Price. Yet, near Thanksgiving, she faces the fact she might soon not belong anywhere at all. Inspired by Mansfield Park.

The Windles and the Lost Boy ~ Rebekah Jones
All Lost Boys could find refuge with Patrick Quill. Jeremy might do the same - if he could find him and if Patrick is real. Inspired by Peter Pan

Grand Intentions ~ J. Grace Pennington
Pippa has always dreamed of being a great novelist, but between her job and helping her mom raise her three younger brothers, she never seems to be able to write. So when her grandmother offers her a few months away with all the time she could wish for, she’s sure to write the story she’s always dreamed of -- or does her problem run deeper than she thinks? Inspired by Great Expectations.

A Fine Day Tomorrow ~ Amanda Tero
Essie March never planned to do much with her life, being the sickly one of the family. And just as she starts to pursue her dream of nursing, it seems that everything stands in her way to prevent it. Inspired by Little Women.

Review of:

A FINE DAY TOMORROW
by Amanda Tero

Five stars for this amazing Little Women retelling.

Imagine the war-wracked world of 1918. If you're not killed from battle wounds, then the Spanish Flu will likely get you instead. In the middle of all this horridness stands the March family on the home front. (No, not the same Marches from Little Women, but cleverly disguised versions of those beloved characters in an all new era and setting.)

The roles of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy are turned over to a new set of sisters, Marge, Charlie, Essie, and Florrie. These girls may have to fight similar battles to the girls in Little Women, but with new causes and new triumphs.

Our unsuspecting leading heroine is actually Essie, a "shy and quiet" girl with the heart of Beth March. This story is hers, had she lived to adulthood and charged forth on a mission in life, in her own way, one that springs forth from the goodness of her heart. Due to time spent as an invalid during childhood, Essie wishes to help others through nursing them back to health. That is her goal in life, along with marrying James, whom she waits for while he is away at war.

“Come, let’s take a turn in the garden. No one else dares venture outside anymore. The whole world is turning into a madhouse.”

It just so happens that this book was written in 2020 at the perfect time, when a pandemic hit our modern world, just like it did in 1918. If you read this story now, you'll be quite impressed with the similarities in life that we in 2020 share with the people of 1918. For example, they made their own masks to wear in public and staying at home was advised (history repeats itself 102 years later).

Essie is also undergoing a deep spiritual journey too, as she struggles to understand God's will for her. She is trying to find joy in her daily life, in both the small things and the large, but she is still wrestling with the idea. I dearly loved seeing God's bright light shining on Essie, waiting for her to give in to His grace.

Perfect for fans of Little Women, literature nerds, and history buffs.

Suitable for: 10 and up - Adults

Kelsey Bryant is an author, editor, and martial arts instructor from Central Texas. She loves God, her family, classic literature, and anything that transports her to the past.

Sarah Holman lives in Central Texas with her amazing family. When not working on her next novel, she can usually be found hanging out with her siblings, reading, or taking long walks. If there is anything adventuresome about her life, it’s because she serves a God with a destiny bigger than anything she could have imagined.

Rebekah Jones is first and foremost a follower of the Living God. She started writing as a little girl, seeking to glorify her King with her books and stories. Rebekah is an old soul in a young body (she’s not 12—honest!). While her exact age is classified, her interests are not. Among them are reading a variety of books, singing, playing and composing music, studying all manner of subjects, nannying an adventurous group of youngsters, and, of course, writing her books, poems, articles, and short stories. She writes a wide range of books from gentle children’s adventures to family sagas to murder mysteries.

J. Grace Pennington has been telling stories since she could talk and writing them down since age five. Now she lives in the great state of Texas, where she writes as much as adult life permits. When she’s not writing she enjoys reading good books, having adventures with her husband, and looking up at the stars.

Amanda Tero grew up attending a one room school with her eleven siblings—and loved it! She also fell in love with reading to the point her mom withheld her books to get her to do her chores. That love of reading turned into a love of writing YA fiction. Amanda is a music teacher by day and a literary guide by night, creating stories that whisk readers off to new eras and introduce them to heroic but flawed characters that live out their faith in astonishing ways.

A Very BOOKISH Christmas in July!

Today, I’m excited to share about the release of the individual stories that were originally part of the A Very Bookish Christmas novella collection. Each story takes elements from classic books and incorporates them into the story.

This weekend, these 4 stories will now be available on Kindle! Let me share a little bit about each story, including my personal reviews!

Sincerely, Jem by Kate Willis

Dear Reader,

My name is Jessie. I'm an expert at introversion and cheesecake eating. (#skillz) I'm trying to become a writer, but gathering inspiration = social interaction, so... no.

The world's best mail carrier suggested I get a pen pal, so this is the story of that pen pal experiment and the beautiful way it opened my eyes.

Merry Christmas and much cheesecake to you!

Sincerely,

Jem

Classic that inspired the story: Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster

Random fun fact: There are two Doctor Who references–one was intentional. See if you can spot them. 😀

Find it on Amazon and Goodreads

My Review

5 Star Rating

Jem/Jessie's personality is fun and wacky. I'd like to be her pen pal too, just like her mystery pen pal in the story.

Reading their letter exchanges back and forth felt nostalgic to me, just like notes that my very good friend and I would write to each other as kids. It kept a smile on my face at all times.

The story is super cute, and contains references to the classic book, Daddy-Long-Legs.

Good, clean, inspirational.
Suitable for: 8 and up - Adults

Random favorite lines:
"Time to run like she was time-traveling with the Doctor."

"So many people with so many different stories filled the world God had made."

Sylvie of Amber Apartments by J. Grace Pennington

Since she was five years old, Sylvie has been obsessed with Anne of Green Gables and trying to make her life as much like Anne Shirley's as possible. But with her black hair and her apartment-building home -- not to mention her older brother and two living parents -- she despairs of ever meeting her aspirations. But could she be more like her heroine than she believes?

Classic that inspired the story: Anne of Green Gables

Random fun fact: Several details in the story were taken from the author's childhood, including the Anne of Green Gables playset, the yellow paperback version of the book, and getting Nancy Drew books for Christmas.

Find it on Amazon and Goodreads

My Review

5 Star Rating

Reading has opened an entire world for Sylvie, just like how I felt like it did for me.

Anne of Green Gables is Sylvie's favorite book in the entire world. She's read it countless times (actually she does keep track of exactly how many times). And Sylvie would eat, sleep, and breathe Anne of Green Gables if she could. She even obsessively shares Anne's desire for a dress with puffed sleeves.

With each Christmas that passes, Sylvie grows up a bit more and sometimes learns an Anne-like lesson. Provides an excellent forward-thinking moral of how we as Christians should be looking forward to our forever home, and written in such a cute, easy way too.

I really enjoyed this darling story, and hope you will too.

Good, clean, inspirational.
Suitable for: 8 and up - Adults

Random favorite line:
"So this -- this was what the depths of despair truly felt like."

Gingerbread Treasures by Rebekah Jones

Missing Gingerbread Men are the Key...

Oliver Breckenridge has a case — one he’s willing to fly all the way across the pond at Christmastime to look into.

Emily Willis says it all started with the gingerbread men. Then came the dognapping. And then the email…

Despite mounting clues, Oliver and his ad hock team of investigators aren’t getting anywhere. Add in a man Oliver hoped never to see again, a few rumors, and even more inconsistencies, and matters aren't clearing up.

Finding the “gingerbread treasure” might turn out to be more than they bargained for.

Classic that inspired the story: Sherlock Holmes The Sign of the Four

Random fun fact: Gingerbread Treasures is just the beginning. I have 18 more books planned that stem off of this story.

Find it on Amazon and Goodreads

My Review

5 Star Rating

From the very first page, this story made me smile. It starts exactly how every good Sherlock Holmes story starts. A missive is received, conveying odd circumstances that only our protagonist can solve. In this case, that's Oliver Breckenridge, who shares his country with The Great Detective himself.

"It all started five years ago with the gingerbread men..."

The similarities continue, as by chapter 2, Oliver has procured lodgings with another bachelor. The Sherlock-Watson connection is ready for the clue-hunting to commence. In fact, the case they are on has many similarities to a particularly good detective story you might recognize, The Sign of Four.

Oliver has a perceptive, deductive mind, always processing the littlest details around him. I reeeeeaaaally enjoyed Oliver's semi-stuck-up British slightly-snobby character. Like Holmes, he doesn't just act that way, but he truly is a know-it-all (in the best sense! -- he literally knows it all). Also, I felt like his British culture was brought out at just the right moments, sometimes a certain turn of phrase, etc.

Some good theological reasoning is thrown into the mix of their witty banter sometimes, which sometimes gives the reader a little meat to really think about spiritually. I looooved those moments in the dialogue.

Also, if you didn't catch on yet, it's December and the holiday festivities are in full swing, which adds a great backdrop to the mystery unfolding. There's even a horse mentioned which is named Bethlehem -- too cute!

Good, clean, inspirational.

Suitable for: 10 and up - Adults

Molly and Anna by Sarah Holman

With the death of her sister near Christmas time, Lacie becomes the guardian of two girls of mixed heritage. Caring for them is harder than she ever imagined. She’s confronted daily with memories she would rather forget and her own prejudice. No matter what, she is determined to give her two nieces the best Christmas she can.

Classic that inspired the story: Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter

Random fun fact: Jared from this story might possibly be the same Jared featured in another of Sarah’s Christmas stories, Distorted Glass (but he was younger in that story)

Find it on Amazon and Goodreads

My Review

4 Star Rating

A Christmas tale, filled with hope and love, inspired by the classic book, Pollyanna.

It's pretty cute. It deals with some darker issues too, like grieving, family loss, regrets, and overcoming social prejudices/racism. But it still keeps an upbeat tone. Has the makings of a Hallmark holiday movie.

Good, clean, inspirational.
Suitable for: 10 and up - Adults

Random favorite line:
"You were saying something about the aunt getting married.”
Lacie’s cheeks burned. “She what?”

These stories are full of a LOT of holiday fun and good-hearted cheer! Just what we need right now! And the same group is putting out an all-new collection this fall! You can add it to Goodreads now.

To celebrate the release of the four Christmas stories, the authors are giving away an Amazon gift card!
